All the snow has melted away, and April rains have revived the plants and trees. Spring is in full effect. It may be hard to believe, but summer is nearly here.
Dust off your badminton racquets and break out the charcoal grills. It’s time to get out into sun, feel the wind in your hair, and lie on your back in the grass.
At Andrew Dine, DDS, we are excited for another summer in Fairfield, OH, but we are also concerned about your dental health. Unfortunately, many of the things that make summer so great also make it hard on your teeth.
If you are not running around and having a good time outside, then what is the point of having summer? This is the time of year when you’re supposed to play ball, go water skiing, tear up trail mountain biking, and just generally enjoying life in the summertime. But even as you have so much fun, be sure to take care to protect your teeth. Accidents can, and will , happen.
Volleyballs, softballs, and Frisbees, these things are hallmarks of a summer weekend. They are also hallmarks of fractured teeth and busted lips. Mouth injuries are incredibly common in the summer. They could result in cosmetic dental issue, like chipped teeth, but they could also cause a serious fracture, or knock a tooth completely out.
Even relatively contact-free activities like hiking and swimming can pose a threat to your smile. Diving boards and pool walls have claimed more than a few teeth over the years. And you need to watch out for rogue tree limbs when hiking, and especially mountain biking, through the woods.
Of course, you don’t want to hide away in your basement all summer for fear that your teeth are going to be knocked out by flying Frisbees and unruly tree branches. You just want to be sure to be careful, and be prepared. Have a dental emergency kit on hand to deal with any unforeseen dental mishaps.
Some of us look forward to summer all winter and spring just so we can enjoy the delicious summer cookout food. It is unlikely that anyone entertains that traditional American cookout food is particularly healthy. For the most part it is loaded with sugar, salt, fat, and other wonderful tasting health hazards. Aside from the problems these foods cause for your general health, they can also be pretty bad for your teeth.
Grill mainstays, like hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, and especially ribs, have a tendency to leave stringy bits of meat in your teeth. And corn on the cob has those pesky husks that get stuck in some part of your mouth you just never seem to be able to get to. This is not just annoying, it can actually cause some real problems for your oral health. If those pieces of food stay in your teeth, they will be food for bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
The condiments served at cookouts, like barbecue sauce and ketchup, are enough to give you a toothache. They are loaded with sugar and acid, which are the two main causes of tooth decay. Don’t forget about the sweet tea and homemade lemonade. Both of these summer beverages are bad for your teeth, not to mention, if you’re drinking these all day you are not drinking water, which is essential for healthy teeth and gums.
