Greetings Fairfield, OH! Welcome back to the ongoing dental blog of Andrew Dine, DDS. today we want to talk about a topic that will come up for many of our patients at least once: filling a cavity.
Cavities are the most common form of tooth decay. They can cause you pain and discomfort. If left untreated, cavities can later require a root canal or other involved and costly dental procedures.
Metal Fillings Are Old-Fashioned and Outdated
If you’ve had dental work performed in the past, you may have a metal colored filling somewhere in your smile. These fillings often appear to be dark silver or gray in appearance.
Frustratingly enough, these fillings are visible every time you laugh, smile, yawn, or even just talk. The metal flashes dark in contrast to the white of your teeth. This jarring contrast draws attention to the fact that you’ve had dental work performed. Don’t tolerate this embarrassment anymore! We offer tooth-colored fillings in our Fairfield, OH office.
Metal fillings, also called amalgam fillings, we’re the go to filling for many years. This is because the mixture and metals used were inexpensive, and seemingly strong and effective. But amalgam fillings have a number of problems.
The principle problem is that mercury can actually leak out of amalgam fillings. This can cause you damage to your body, and make you sick. Amalgam fillings also allow some amount of bacteria into your teeth, which could lead to infection later on. Last by not least, metal fillings took more space to install causing some healthy tissue to be removed.
A Tooth-Colored Filling is A Better Solution
Our patients deserve a solution that looks great, but would also do the job of sealing a cavity. For that reason, we offer composite resin fillings. These fillings match the appearance of your natural teeth, while sealing your cavity completely. Composite resin is pliable so we can easily match your filling to your cavity.
In addition, composite resin does not require us to remove as much enamel from your teeth. This means that your filling will be more concise and faster to install. We simply layer the resin into the cavity, allowing the resin to bond with your natural tooth.
After this process has finished, we trim and buff off the excess resin material. This means your filling is completely camouflaged into your tooth, and matches your natural smile completely.
Best of all, we can install fillings in a completely pain-free manner. We can offer laughing gas to you to help you feel at ease during the filling. In addition, we use DentalVibe which uses the science of vibration to prevent you from feeling your injection.
